From Passion to Purpose : What SHOW YOUR WORK! taught me

Maybe it seems like just a passion, but who knows? One day, it may grow into a purpose. We all carry an in-built spark born from curiosity and passion, yet we often don’t know how to unleash it and let it be discovered.

As someone building Misty Love, I often wondered whether my work was worth sharing and whether it could become a real purpose. That’s when I came across the book Show Your Work!.

SHOW YOUR WORK

By Austin Kleon

This book is about learning, creating, and sharing your craft while finding your audience. In a simple yet powerful way, the author encourages readers to overcome self-doubt and reminds us that we don’t need to be geniuses to begin. It is perfectly fine to be an amateur, as endless possibilities lie ahead. The book emphasizes finding your voice, loving what you do, and sharing your work even when it feels messy or imperfect.

What I loved most about this book is that anyone who wants to pursue art often carries a set of excuses and becomes anxious about living up to the idea of being perfect. However, the author emphasizes the importance of creating and sharing despite imperfections. Consistency matters more than perfection.
This book is for anyone who wants to create an identity through their craft.

THE IDEAS THAT RESONATE WITH ME

• The idea of Scenius was an eye-opening concept for me, as I had never come across this word before. The word genius often carries a sense of appraisal and creates higher expectations around one’s craft. In contrast, scenius feels more accessible and flexible.

This term was popularized by Brian Eno. This suggests that you don’t have to be a genius; instead, you can grow by engaging in a creative community.

• The idea of documenting and recording your process

“Whether you share it or not, documenting and recording your process as you go along has its own rewards : you’ll start to see the work you’re doing more clearly and feel like you’re making process. And when you’re ready to share, you’ll have a surplus of material to choose from”

• The idea of sharing good stories about your work. We often want to disclose only the final, polished product to the audience. However, the author emphasizes the importance of genuinely connecting with the people, getting them into our workspace, sharing our journey and the story behind the finished output. There is no need to brag, seek attention and focus on likes and follows, just show who you are and let your work speak for itself.

HOW THIS BOOK INSPIRES ME TO START MISTYLOVE

I’m a lover of self-love books. When I was at my lowest moments, unsure of myself and doubtful of my own self-worth, I began reading books. Thus, I gained confidence and clarity, was amazed by how impactful and life-changing words can be. So I have always wanted my words to inspire somebody in some way. After coming across SHOW YOUR WORK !, I gained the confidence to start my own blog page to genuinely show my work.

The Most Powerful takeaway from this book is no matter how long your craft takes to grow, just stick around, never quit your show. Every journey has its own challenges, maybe you win or lose but in the end, the quality of your work really matters.
